Elektra Tonquartier in the Bergson power station

The Bergson Kunstkraftwerk in Munich-Aubing opened in spring 2024 and is a new cultural centre of attraction in the west of Munich. The former combined heat and power plant from the 1920s, long unused and left to decay, was transformed into a cultural centre on the initiative of brothers Christian and Michael Amberger, Managing Directors of Allguth GmbH.

The Elektra Tonquartier with its integrated Vivace system forms the heart of the cultural centre and was officially opened on 9 October to great media interest. In addition, the concert event ‘Vivace’, which was specially designed and composed for our electronic room acoustics system, celebrated its premiere on 20 October and also caused great amazement and enthusiasm among the audience.

The Vivace system makes it possible to flexibly adapt the acoustic properties of the room in real time – from studio-like conditions, which are ideal for the techno-jazz concerts of the Jazzrausch Big Band, to the intimate acoustics of a chamber music hall and the majestic sound atmosphere of a Gothic cathedral. With a capacity of almost 500 people, the hall not only serves as a venue for techno, jazz and classical music, but also as an experimental laboratory for artists who want to realise creative sound experiments and immersive sound experiences in a flexible, precise acoustic environment.

A musical revolution“ – Press review

It just really blew me away. Such sound quality, such volume, but at the same time so pleasant to listen to. You don’t really get that very often. I’m totally blown away.

And now you are sitting in the Elektra-Tonquartier in the Bergson-Kunstkraftwerk in Munich and getting at least an instrumental idea of how Venetian polychoral music might have worked. Yet there are only 24 musicians on the podium. And only there, not anywhere in the room. The fact that you still have the impression of sitting in a huge nave surrounded by music is down to Vivace.

Vivace is an acoustic system developed by the Müller-BBM company that changes the sound of a room. The building remains the same, but the hall always sounds different, depending on how the system is set up. Vivace has already been used at various venues, such as the Bregenz Festival, the Passion Play in Oberammergau or the Sydney Opera House, where it is used to remedy acoustic adversities. But it is only here in Elektra that the system really shows what it can do: It turns the hall itself into an instrument.

A warm, full sound fills the room, the voices come through transparently and the quality of the sound and acoustics is excellent. The sound system works and delivers chamber music in the best atmosphere. (…) As an encore, there is a chorale by Telemann, now with a variable sound design. In the two verses, the sound changes from chamber music to unprocessed sound quality by switching off Vivace to church sound. The clearly perceptible change is striking. Even Julian Prégardien is taken aback by the deceptively similar electronically created sacred timbre, as if in a mighty church hall.

The Elektra Tonquartier opened with a furious evening. The modern, versatile concert hall in Bergson in Aubing is a stunner. First impressions of a promising sound concept. The big bang in Aubing will reverberate for a long time to come.
