Pianist and concert manager Till Janczukowicz is reading the New York Times when he learns of plans to build a huge cultural centre in Abu Dhabi. Star architects such as Zaha Hadid and Frank Gehry had just submitted their designs for this cultural mecca. Among other things, a 6,000-seat performing arts centre was to be completed by 2020.
Janczukowicz is absolutely thrilled: without further ado, he proposes a series of classical concerts featuring world-renowned musicians to the Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Heritage. The Abu Dhabi Classics are born and are immediately met with enthusiasm by the Arab public.
From October 2008 to spring 2011, every major name in the classical music world graced Abu Dhabi with their presence: the Vienna Philharmonic, the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Zubin Mehta, Lorin Maazel, Cecilia Bartoli, Lang Lang, Bobby McFerrin and many more. The venue is a hall in the luxury Emirates Palace Hotel. With expert support from VIVACE, natural sound spaces are created in this acoustically highly dampened conference hall, which are optimally adapted to the individual concert programmes of these exceptional performers.
