Kuppelsaal, TU Wien

On 25 April 2026, pianist and composer Renzo Vitale and the TU Wien Orchestra presented an immersive multimedia concert at the Kuppelsaal of TU Wien, bringing together chamber music, electronic sound and immersive audio. Under the musical direction of Simon Erdei, the two-part programme combined piano and orchestra with synthesisers, backing tracks and film. The sound design was created by Josy Friebel.

The first part featured Vitale’s eleven-movement chamber work La Quinta Stagione. The instruments were presented without conventional sound reinforcement. VIVACE.fx was used as a reverb engine to extend the hall’s reverberation time with precision. This gave the music greater spatial development while preserving the transparency and natural character of the ensemble.

After the interval, the programme continued with DISORDERS, a composition for orchestra, synthesisers, backing tracks and film. For this work, VIVACE.fx was used both for reverberation enhancement and object-based mixing. Around 60 audio sources could be positioned individually within the space and reproduced through approximately 20 loudspeakers. Orchestra, electronic sounds and pre-produced content were thus integrated into a spatially differentiated overall composition.

The system was controlled via OSC from a DiGiCo console and through VIVACE.control, allowing the immersive sound design to be integrated precisely into the performance workflow. Over the course of a single concert evening, VIVACE.fx created two distinct acoustic scenarios: a subtly enhanced environment supporting chamber-music transparency and an immersive sound field for the multimedia interplay of music and film.
